This year's event in Las Vegas will leverage the principle of polarity in the design of nearly every component of the learning experience. To begin, you’ll have two pre-event options: either re-walk the Learning ExcursionEM tour stops from the original 2001 thinkAbout in Las Vegas, or un-wind in a lounge with other non-touring participants.
Our Day One AM talent is none other than the always-smiling magician extraordinaire, Giovanni Livera. As one of the most sought-after corporate entertainers in America, Gio’s upbeat style and meaningful messages lie in stark contrast to the academic tenor and serious-mindedness of Pine & Gilmore.
For our Day Two PM Learning Excursion, Pine & Gilmore will guide separate teams in first defining two different sets of polarities, then exploring the Las Vegas landscape for insights about each polarity, and finally preparing output to share the next day – through a variety of different media – the lessons learned through this real-world investigation.
The Day Two AM debrief will ping-pong the Pine team against the Gilmore team, with each group alternatively sharing their respective thoughts on what everyone should take away from their study of the various polarities examined the previous day (and night, of course).
Day Two PM will close with the bestowing of this year’s Experience Management Achievement award and the presentation of Pine & Gilmore’s Top Ten list of recommended experiences to take in during the coming year – concluding with this year’s Experience Stager of the Year (EXPY) winner. And to cap it all off, this year’s “One Big Idea” exercise will involve the identification of one key polarity for your business and/or for your self. |

Day 0
thinkAbout 101
As a warm up, Pine & Gilmore will share thoughts on a few fundamental frameworks of the Experience Economy and authenticity, plus introduce two thinkAbout alumni to share their thoughts on “how to get the most out of the thinkAbout experience.”
Two for the Price of One
OPTION #1 For those who were not at the original thinkAbout in Las Vegas, or for those interested in repeating the tour as a refresher, Jim Gilmore plans to retrace the same Learning Excursion route that we took in 2001. While then we toured from 2:00 p.m. until midnight, as this year’s pre-event tour we’ll cover the same ground in half the time. How will we do it? We’ll basically cut down on the amount of time at each tour stop by providing an encapsulated
review of what we did in the original excursion, talk about what we did, and most importantly share highlights from the debrief that transpired afterward. And as with all thinkAbout excursions, there will be plenty of opportunity to talk while we walk. Dinner will be provided during the tour.
THE OTHER OPTION? Joe Pine, on the other hand, will host a lounge gathering for those who would rather sit and chat. It’s an opportunity to catch up with old friends, meet some new ones, and of course, grill Joe with any questions you might have!

Day One AM
Live A Thousand Years After Pine & Gilmore kickoff the event by framing it with their perspective on the role of polarity in rendering authenticity, they will hand the show over to Giovanni Livera. Gio has twice participated in thinkAbout so he is very familiar with how we use the Day One AM segment to set the tone for the event by infusing the gathering with a stimulating perspective of the world. We’ve asked Gio to mix-and-mash elements of his various programs to create a truly unique, highly interactive educational extravaganza for us. It’s Vegas, baby! WoW!

Day One PM
Learning ExcursionEM
After lunch, we’ll divide the 100-strong crowd into two teams. One group will be with Pine and the other with Gilmore. Each team will define seven polarities that (a) best define the landscape of Las Vegas, and (b) simultaneously represent key polarities that have application to participants’ own businesses and industries. Then the teams will make separate plans to explore Vegas in search of insights about each polarity, plotting about places and people to visit to gain and document insights, and forming sub-teams to perform the needed tasks. Finally, each team will return to “base” and prepare to present their findings the next day. Pine & Gilmore will serve as active coaches, guiding each group along the way.

Day Two AM
Real Lessons from Exploring Polarities
To debrief fourteen polarities we plan to mix-and-mash Open Space Technology with our own “4E” model (Entertainment, Educational, Escapist, and Esthetic) from The Experience Economy to create multiple options for sharing lessons learned about each polarity. We’ll have a formal stage for staged performances (skits, role-plays, interviews, etc.) available as one option. Other space will be available for facilitating group exercises (table discussions, table tasks, and so on). An area will also be devoted to showcasing any displays as a means of communicating findings; participants will be free to roam about this gallery of objects and artifacts. And finally, there will be “Open Space within Open Space,” a lounge-like area for discussing various topics from one group to another.

Day Two PM
Lessons from the Best
We’ll close by awarding and interviewing the Experience Management Achievement (EMA) award winner. Then we’ll countdown the Top Ten experiences we recommend you take in during the coming year. Each experience comes with a question that Pine & Gilmore pose to participants based on that exemplar. The #1 experience in the countdown will be our Experience Stager of the Year (EXPY) award winner, and representatives from the winning enterprise will be interviewed by Pine & Gilmore. Finally, participants will identify “one dominant polarity” as the “One Big Idea” they take away from the two days. (All will certainly take away more than this one idea, but the exercise serves to focus on first things first.)
WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA FOR WINNING THE EMA AND EXPY AWARDS?
One simple factor: whoever and whatever Pine & Gilmore deem most deserving of receiving the awards. |
